Precision plastic that behaves like metal. Self-lubricating.
Delrin (polyoxymethylene) combines the dimensional stability of metals with the low friction of PTFE. The go-to plastic for gears, bushings, cams, and any precision mechanical component below 100°C service.

Delrin / POM grades.
Delrin 150 / 500
DuPont Delrin — the homopolymer. Slightly higher strength and stiffness than copolymer, but can center-core porosity in thick sections. Most popular grade for general precision mechanical.
POM-C (Copolymer)
Celanese Celcon / BASF Ultraform copolymer. More dimensionally stable in hot water / steam, no center-core porosity. Preferred for thick-section parts.
Delrin AF (Teflon-filled)
PTFE fiber-filled Delrin. Dynamic coefficient of friction drops to 0.05–0.10. Highest-performance unlubricated bearing material.
Delrin 570 (Glass-filled)
Glass fiber reinforced. Flexural modulus doubles to 5.9 GPa. Reduces creep under sustained load. Structural brackets, load-bearing.
Delrin SP (Premium)
DuPont premium grade with reduced internal stress for tighter tolerances and improved consistency. Used for aerospace and precision mechanical.
POM-ESD
Carbon-filled POM with surface resistivity 10^6–10^9 Ω. For semiconductor handling fixtures, electronics manufacturing.
Homopolymer (DuPont Delrin) vs copolymer (Celanese Celcon / BASF Ultraform) — slight differences in processing, chemistry, and performance. Filled variants for specific needs.
Why Delrin excels at precision mechanical.
Dimensional stability
Low water absorption (0.22% vs nylon's 2–3%) and modest thermal expansion. Parts hold tolerance through humidity and temperature cycles.
Low friction
Dynamic friction coefficient 0.20 unfilled, 0.05 with PTFE fill. Self-lubricating — no oil or grease needed for most applications.
Fatigue resistance
Outstanding fatigue under cyclic loading. Delrin gears run millions of cycles where nylon fatigues and fails.
Machinability
Excellent. Machines faster than most engineering plastics, with sharp tools produces Ra 0.8 µm as-machined without post-processing.
Delrin's combination of four properties is unmatched in the mid-performance thermoplastic range. These make it the default choice wherever metal is over-specified but nylon isn't stable enough.
Delrin applications.
Precision gears
Spur, helical, bevel gears for low-load, low-noise applications
Cams & linkages
Mechanism cams, pushrods, linkage arms — dimensionally stable
Bushings & bearings
Dry-running bushings, self-lubricating bearings (Delrin AF)
Conveyor components
Chain links, wear strips, guide rails — low friction
Valve components
Poppets, seats, stems — chemical resistance
Fasteners
Nylock-style captive fasteners, plastic screws, standoffs
Electrical insulation
Insulator blocks, standoffs, circuit mounting — good dielectric
Food processing
Drive chains, wear parts (FDA-compliant Delrin 100P)
Medical devices
Valve bodies, dispensing mechanisms (USP Class VI grade)
Delrin finishing.
As-machined
Typical Ra 0.8 µm with sharp tools. Delrin machines exceptionally cleanly.
Flame polished
Quick flame polish for clear visible surfaces — smooths tool marks.
Bead blasted
Matte uniform finish. Common for functional parts where appearance isn't critical.
Laser marked
Standard for serial numbers and traceability. Good contrast on natural Delrin.
Pad printed
Accepts specialty UV-cure inks for logos or markings.
Colored
Stock in natural white, black, blue. Custom colors on 500 kg+ runs via compounder.
Tumble deburred
Standard post-machining deburring for edge-sensitive applications.
Annealed
Post-machining heat treatment (140 °C, 4–24 hours) stress-relieves for dimensional stability.

Precision plastic that behaves like metal — questions
Delrin vs Nylon — which should I choose?
Delrin for: dimensional stability, low moisture sensitivity, precision gears, bearings under load, low-friction dry-running. Nylon for: higher strength when glass-filled, better impact resistance, lower cost, higher temperature service. A common heuristic: if the part needs to hold ±0.05 mm tolerance in varying humidity, use Delrin. If it needs 100 MPa strength and moderate tolerance, use nylon.
Is Delrin homopolymer or copolymer better?
It depends. Homopolymer (DuPont Delrin) has slightly higher strength and stiffness but can develop internal porosity ("centerline porosity") in thick sections over 1 inch. Copolymer (Celcon/Ultraform) is more dimensionally stable in hot water/steam service and has no centerline porosity. For thick-section parts or hot water service, copolymer. For thin-section precision mechanical, homopolymer.
Can Delrin be glued or welded?
Gluing: Delrin is notoriously difficult to bond with adhesives. Surface preparation (plasma treatment, sulfuric acid etch) enables cyanoacrylate or epoxy bonding, but strength is modest. Welding: ultrasonic welding works. Hot-plate and vibration welding also possible. For Delrin assemblies, mechanical fasteners or press-fits are usually preferred over adhesives.
Does Delrin have any chemical resistance issues?
Delrin is attacked by strong acids (concentrated sulfuric, nitric, hydrochloric) and chlorine at elevated temperature. Swells in some ketones and aromatic solvents. Stable in most alcohols, hydrocarbons, dilute acids and bases, oils, fuels. For aggressive chemicals, specify PEEK or PTFE instead.
Is Delrin FDA-approved for food contact?
Yes — FDA-compliant Delrin grades (such as Delrin 100P NC010) meet FDA 21 CFR 177.2470 for food contact. Specify the food-grade variant explicitly when ordering for food processing applications. Most standard Delrin 150 and 500 grades are general-purpose and not automatically food-contact certified.
