Key principles.
PVC, ABS, acrylic
Solvent dissolves plastic surface, pieces bond. Strong, fast. Limited to compatible plastics.
Universal
Adhesives bond any combination. Choice: cyanoacrylate, epoxy, urethane. Cure time varies.
Production fast
Ultrasonic energy melts joint. Sub-second cycle. Energy directors guide melt.
Larger parts
Friction-based. For larger parts where ultrasonic insufficient. Slower than ultrasonic.
Highest strength
Both surfaces heated, then pressed together. Strongest joint, slow cycle.
When disassembly needed
Snap fits, threaded inserts, screws. For service-friendly products.
FAQ
Solvent: PVC, ABS, acrylic, polycarbonate. Adhesive: any plastic, especially polyolefins (PE, PP) which solvents won't bond.
Triangular ridges (60-90° apex angle, 0.4-0.8 mm height) on one surface. Concentrate ultrasonic energy.
Lap joint: shear loaded. Butt joint: tensile loaded. Tongue-and-groove: aligned and stronger.
Clean of contamination, sometimes plasma activate for difficult plastics (PE, PP, PEEK).
Adhesive: low volume. Ultrasonic: high volume automation. Hot plate: medium volume, large parts.
Welded joints permanent. Adhesive joints destructible (heat or solvent). Mechanical: removable.
