01 · Delrin grades

Delrin / POM variants.

Delrin 150 (Homopolymer)

DuPont homopolymer. Highest strength and stiffness in acetal family. Excellent dimensional stability, low friction. Standard precision mechanical

Acetal Copolymer (POM-C)

Copolymer acetal. Better chemical resistance (especially hot water, alkali). Slightly lower tensile strength than homopolymer. More consistent material in thick sections

Delrin AF (Teflon-filled)

PTFE-filled Delrin for low-friction bearing applications. Lower coefficient of friction (0.15 vs 0.25 for unfilled). Wear strips, bushings running dry against metal

Delrin 100AL (Medical)

FDA-compliant grade for food contact, pharmaceutical. Medical-grade Delrin for drug delivery, fluid handling hardware

Delrin Conductive

Carbon-filled Delrin for ESD-dissipative applications. Electronic assembly fixtures, wafer handling hardware

POM-GF

Glass-reinforced acetal for higher stiffness and dimensional stability. Structural mechanical components requiring low creep

Two main families: homopolymer (stronger, slightly more crystalline) and copolymer (more chemical resistance, slightly less strength). Filled grades for specialty applications.

FAQ

Precision gears — questions

Delrin vs Nylon — which to choose?

Delrin (POM): excellent dimensional stability (0.4% water absorption), better for precision components, higher creep resistance, easier to machine. Nylon: better impact resistance, lower cost, higher tensile strength but absorbs water (up to 7% for Nylon 6). For precision mechanical components (gears, bushings requiring tight tolerances), Delrin wins. For impact-resistant or low-cost structural parts, nylon typically wins.

Can Delrin run dry against metal bearings?

Yes — one of Delrin's best applications. Unfilled Delrin runs against 316L stainless or hardened steel shafts at PV values up to 2,500 (psi·fpm). Delrin AF (PTFE-filled) doubles that rating. Never run Delrin dry against aluminum (galling). Never use against brass at high load (dissimilar hardness causes plastic wear). For highest PV limits, consider Vespel or PEEK-bearing grades.

Can Delrin be welded?

Yes — ultrasonic, vibration, hot-plate, and friction welding all work on Delrin. Ultrasonic welding is most common for production assembly of Delrin parts. Weld strengths typically 60–80% of parent material. For assemblies that must be disassembled, use threaded inserts or mechanical fasteners instead.

Is Delrin suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, with UV stabilization. Natural Delrin degrades from UV exposure over 2–5 years outdoors. Black Delrin (carbon-filled) is more UV-resistant. For long outdoor service, specify UV-stabilized grade or use black Delrin. For extreme UV, consider UV-stabilized Nylon 12 or add UV-protective coating.

Delrin surface finishes?

As-machined Delrin: Ra 0.8 µm single-pass — one of the best natural finishes of any engineering plastic. Polished: Ra 0.2 µm achievable. Laser-marked: excellent contrast on natural Delrin. Bead blasted: uniform matte finish. Bonding: requires surface preparation (plasma or acid etch) due to Delrin's inherent release properties.

Delrin discoloration over time?

Natural Delrin slightly yellows in hot environments over years (thermal oxidation). For cosmetic applications where color matters, specify black Delrin (carbon filled — no discoloration) or UV-stabilized grade. For color consistency in long-service applications, specify color at order rather than relying on natural.
