Key principles.
Press in, heat
Pressed in, heated to fuse with plastic. Common for ABS, nylon. 1000+ cycles strength.
Vibrate to install
Ultrasonic energy melts plastic during installation. Fast, automated. Good for production.
Cut threads
Cuts thread in pre-drilled hole. Quick installation. Strength varies vs heat-set.
In tool during molding
Insert placed in tool, plastic molded around. Very strong but requires molding investment.
Wire coil
Coil thread that resists pullout. Used in soft materials with extreme thread loading.
Per environment
Brass for corrosion resistance, carbon steel for strength. Stainless for premium.
FAQ
Insert: stronger, more cycles, better with hot/humid environment. Molded thread: cheaper, simpler. Insert standard for quality plastic assemblies.
Pilot hole = insert OD + 0.0-0.1 mm clearance. Boss diameter ≥ 2× insert OD.
Heat-set ~2000 N axial, ultrasonic ~1500 N. Material and depth dependent.
Pull test sample after install. Verify proper engagement, no plastic damage. Visual + force test.
Heat-set 100s of cycles. Self-tapping fewer (50-100). Helicoil best for extreme cycles.
Heat-set inserts retain strength to material limit. Plastic creeps at temperature reducing thread engagement.
