FAQ

Saltwater champion — questions

Saltwater corrosion material selection?

For maximum saltwater corrosion resistance: Monel 400/K-500 (best for immersed service), duplex 2205/2507 (great pitting resistance), 316L (general marine, less severe), naval brass C464 (bronze family, good for fittings). Avoid: carbon steel without coating (rusts rapidly), 304 stainless (not seawater-rated), aluminum grades without anodizing (galvanic corrosion with seawater).

Galvanic corrosion concerns?

Marine assemblies often contain multiple metals — galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals is major concern. Galvanic series: gold/platinum (most noble) → titanium → nickel → stainless → bronze/brass → carbon steel → aluminum → zinc → magnesium (most active). Isolation techniques: dielectric breaks between dissimilar metals, sacrificial anodes, careful material selection. Our DFM review flags potential galvanic issues.

Bronze vs brass for marine?

Bronze: copper + tin alloy. Superior saltwater corrosion resistance, naval standard. Higher cost. Brass: copper + zinc. Good for above-waterline, not ideal for immersed service (zinc leaching = dezincification in saltwater). Naval brass (C464) is brass with tin addition for improved saltwater resistance — middle ground. For immersed fittings: bronze. For above-waterline hardware: naval brass or bronze both acceptable.

Submarine non-magnetic requirements?

Submarine applications often require non-magnetic materials — avoid interference with MAD sensors (magnetic anomaly detection). Non-magnetic options: austenitic 304/316L stainless (non-magnetic in annealed condition), Monel 404 (special non-magnetic grade), beryllium copper, titanium, aluminum. Specify non-magnetic requirement on drawings — affects material selection.

Offshore platform applications?

Offshore platforms (oil and gas): combination of saltwater + H2S + pressure + temperature. Material selection critical. Common: duplex 2205 or 2507 for piping and pressure equipment, Monel K-500 for wellhead + subsea, Inconel 718 for most critical sour service, titanium for ballast tanks in specific applications. Full NACE MR0175 compliance mandatory for sour service.

Lead times for marine programs?

Commercial marine: 4-8 weeks typical. Offshore platform programs: 8-16 weeks with full documentation. Submarine and military marine: 12-24 weeks with security review. Material lead times for specialty marine alloys (Monel K-500, duplex 2507) can be 4-8 weeks — often drives program timeline. Plan 6+ months ahead for complex marine programs.
